Velvet Andrews Smith

Director, Screenwriter, Producer

I’m a writer/director/producer and a positive, energetic collaborator. I strive to create imaginative, cinematic films that explore the power of connection between people.

I gained experience in film and television working as an Assistant Director for many years before becoming a filmmaker.

My first short film, Two-Eleven, is a 19-minute action/drama. The film screened festivals including LA Shorts Fest, Newport Beach Film Festival, Beverly Hills Film Fest, Malibu International, Raleigh Studios Film Fest, USA Film Fest, Hollyshorts Film Fest and many more.

After making this film, I was one of eight women selected for the American Film Institute Directing Workshop for Women. This year-long program was created to elevate emerging filmmakers while they hone their craft as directors.

During this time, I wrote, directed and produced Ripple Effect, a 20-minute war drama, which screened at Vancouver International Film Festival, LA Shorts Fest, GI Film Festival, Newport Beach and many more. The film won Best Short at the International Cinematography Awards and also screened on Amazon Prime.

I was then selected for the ABC/Disney Directing Program. This two-year shadowing program was created to introduce directors vetted by ABC and Disney to showrunners and producers, with the intention of creating opportunities to direct episodic television. During this program, I shadowed directors on Scandal and Revenge.

I also set up my own shadowing opportunities on two episodes of The Fosters. I was hired to direct my first episode (Season 4, Episode 5) which was a dream come true.

I'm currently writing and developing future projects.
